A Drink Before the War - Dennis Lehane Perfectly serviceable hard-boiled crime fiction, with a nice sense of noir phrasing. Not so much a mystery as a slow burn through inevitable violence.

But the writing was good, the characters engaging, the city bleak and realistic, and the book grapples with, but does not try to solve, issues around race relations in Boston. Again, more a novel of character rather than a mystery presented for the reader to try to solve.
